Using the same four-line structure from the classroom chant, learners are encouraged to:

  • Add rhythm, gestures, props, or drawings

  • Record their chant (audio, video, puppet show… anything goes!)

  • Share it on TikTok or Instagram using #MyVerbChant and tagging @EnrichingELT  or submit it privately in class, on Padlet, or Flip

Teaching Classroom Instructions with the MMM Framework

Clear instructions are essential for EAL learners — and pairing them with simple, consistent gestures makes them easier to understand, remember, and use. This handout provides a set of common classroom verbs (like look, listen, write, sit down) with suggested gestures you can use every day.

By combining words, actions, and images, learners quickly connect meaning and build confidence in following instructions. The gestures are easy to learn, fun to use, and adaptable to your teaching style.

👉 Use the chart to:

  • Introduce classroom instructions in a clear, consistent way

  • Support comprehension for beginners and mixed-level groups

  • Encourage learners to respond physically, making language more memorable

  • Gradually move from gesture + word → to word only, as confidence grows
