Practical Approaches to supporting EAL Learners

    Self-Study Course

You don’t need to be an EAL specialist to support multilingual learners effectively. However, understanding how language and learning work together can help you make your teaching more accessible, inclusive and effective.

This practical self-study course introduces classroom-ready approaches that can be used across subjects and age groups. Through short videos, classroom examples, guided tasks and reflection activities, you will explore purposeful adjustments you can make to your existing teaching, without substantially increasing your workload.

    What you’ll learn

    You will explore:

    • how to apply the CREAM conditions, (Comprehensible Input, Repetition, Experimentation, Association & Adaptation, and Meaningful Output) in everyday teaching
    • how to structure learning using the MMM framework: Meet, Manipulate, Make it Your Own
    • practical ways to support understanding, participation and language development
    • how to integrate vocabulary, grammar and subject content
    • how to adapt activities for different learners, subjects and age groups
    • how small changes to existing teaching can improve access to learning for everyone

    How the course works

This is a self-paced course, so you can work through the materials at a time and pace that suit you.

    Each section includes:

    • short, focused video input
    • practical classroom examples
    • guided tasks and opportunities for reflection
    • downloadable handouts for future reference

You will also have opportunities to apply what you have learned by developing your own lesson ideas, using either your own classroom materials or the texts provided in the course.

    Who this course is for

    This course is suitable for:

    • primary and secondary teachers working with EAL learners
    • subject teachers in multilingual classrooms
    • teaching assistants and other classroom practitioners
    • teachers who are new to EAL and want practical, manageable approaches
    • experienced teachers who want to reflect on and strengthen their existing practice

    Why take this course?

Supporting EAL learners does not necessarily mean creating additional resources or entirely new lessons. This course helps you identify small, purposeful adjustments to what you already do, improving access, participation and learning for multilingual learners, and often benefiting the whole class.
