EAL for Schools

I work with SLTs and EAL coordinators who need to support their EAL teachers.

Many subject and classroom teachers are naturally very competent users of English, but they have little understanding of how language works and are therefore unable to explain it to their pupils.

A head of EAL at an international school recently told me that grammar is a big scary thing for most teachers, and they deal with it by avoiding it. This means that uncorrected errors in primary become ‘fossilised’ (embedded in the learner), which is much harder to fix when the pupils get to secondary.

I have constructed a course specifically for teachers of  EAL which will not only provide them with the skills of being able to identify the language the learners will need, but how to make small changes to their teaching practice in order to make the content more accessible and produce better results.

This course is designed to run asynchronously so it can be completed  when it suits the teacher. However, there is also the option of running it  as a closed group within a school. This could be done as a series of webinars for a specific group of teachers or I could work in conjunction with the EAL coordinator or SLT and  guide them through delivering the sessions with the teachers in their school.

If you would like negotiate how this course could be run for a closed group of teachers from your school, please get in touch to book a call.

We had three sessions, followed up by 1-to-1 tutorials and the completion of workbooks by the attendees. The sessions were profoundly impactful and beneficial, not only for our EAL teachers but would be for our mainstream teachers as well. Jane’s CPD sessions focused on crucial aspects such as activating learning, enhancing vocabulary, and refining instructional techniques. These strategies are universally applicable (and linked to HPL characteristics) and have significantly enriched our overall teaching methodology. The insights provided by Jane have equipped the EAL teachers with effective tools to engage all students more dynamically and inclusively. Jane’s CPD sessions offer a comprehensive framework for understanding and addressing the unique needs of EAL students, making them an invaluable resource for any educational institution committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment. I highly recommend Jane’s services and am confident that all teachers will greatly benefit from her expertise.

Webinars and Seminars

I have presented workshops, seminars and webinars on numerous topics, and in various locations around the world. If there is a specific area you would like a session on or would like to work with me, please get in touch to book a call.

I recently invited Jane to come and do two training sessions for primary and secondary teachers for an Oxford University Press event in Lyon, France. She was fantastic to work with, very professional and more importantly teachers loved it. We had great feedback from participants and our hosts. Her sessions were engaging and interactive, and I would very gladly work with her again.
